Pulsatile Tinnitus Treatment Pulsating Tinnitus |
| A person suffering from pulsatile tinnitus or pulsating tinnitus experiences unwanted ear noise in the form of rhythmic pulsing that often corresponds with the beating of the heart. The good news is that the effectiveness of pulsatile tinnitus treatment is usually very high. |
| How Does Pulsatile Tinnitus Affect The Sufferer? |
| The word "sufferer" really says it all. It is hard to describe for someone who does not know the constant torment of hearing your own heart beat pounding day in and day out, just how horrible it can be. |
| Pulsating tinnitus can be perceived variously as thumping, lower-pitched booming, swishing, high-pitched clicking, or a blowing sound. It can be either subjective where only the patient can hear the sound, or objective where an outside observer using an instrument such as a stethoscope can also detect the sound. In either event, disturbed blood flow of one kind or another generally lies behind this troubling condition. Individuals experiencing pulsatile tinnitus can simultaneously experience continuous tinnitus, and many sufferers report that of the two the pulsating form is the worse to live with. |
|
While pulsating tinnitus accounts for only about 3% of tinnitus cases, it is very important for anyone experiencing these symptoms to have their condition evaluated by a physician. Though rare, a serious condition may underlie the symptoms which, if not addressed properly, could result in something catastrophic like a stroke. |

| What Causes Pulsatile Tinnitus? |
| What causes pulsatile tinnitus, in a great many cases, cannot always be precisely identified, and those cases are called idiopathic, which simply means unknown cause. Still, pulsating tinnitus can be related to heightened pressure in the head (hydrocephalus), hardening or constriction of the arteries, and lower than normal blood viscosity. Clicking sounds may be caused by contractions of the middle ear and palatal muscles. When the pulsing sound closely corresponds to the rhythm of the heart it is commonly due to a blood vessel malformation in the head or neck area. Low humming noise may be caused by Meniere's disease, especially when vertigo and intermittent hearing loss is also present. The following list, while not exhaustive, includes other known causes of pulsatile tinnitus. |
- Atherosclerosis, in which the arteries become narrowed due to plaque buildup, can cause tinnitus due to constricted and uneven blood flow to the head and neck area.
- Benign intracranial hypertension, increased pressure within the brain in the absence of a tumor, may also cause tinnitus. It is most common in women between the ages of 20 and 50.
- High blood pressure sometimes causes tinnitus, and that condition can often be improved simply by changing your diet or taking proper medication.
- Meniere’s Disease, is commonly blamed for causing tinnitus. It is related to a host of inner ear disorders, believed to be triggered by an imbalance of inner ear fluid pressure.
- Glomus tumor, which consists of bunches of tissues and entangled blood vessels in the ear or the immediate surrounding area can become a cause of tinnitus.
- Intracranial vascular lesions, including aneurism and arteriovenous malformations, can produce tinnitus, due to disruption of normal blood flow between an artery and a vein.
- Middle ear effusion, in which fluid accumulates in the middle ear (which is normally a dry space) due to inflammation or infection, can cause pulsatile tinnitus, generally in middle aged patients.
- Acoustic Neuroma, which consists of a benign tumor, is sometimes found responsible for causing abnormal ear noise.

| What Pulsatile Tinnitus Treatment Options Are Available? |
| Whenever a definitive cause can be pin-pointed, the cure rate for pulsating tinnitus is high. If a precise cause cannot be diagnosed in your case, do not lose heart. Many cases of pulsating tinnitus are idiopathic, yet even then the chances for achieving tinnitus freedom are excellent with natural, holistic treatment. |
| Conventional medicine can go a long way toward treating certain forms of pulsating tinnitus, as when a cause can be identified, such as surgery for bone or blood vessel malformations, or for controlling hypertension or high blood pressure with medication. For the large majority of cases, however, conventional medicine focuses on treating the symptoms without ever really getting to the underlying conditions that cause the symptoms. |
| Therefore, even if conventional treatments do bring some relief, once the medication is withdrawn the tinnitus symptoms march right back in, because the causative factors were not addressed. In addition, pharmaceuticals often produce undesirable side effects. The best way, and in many cases the only way, to get to the underlying issues causing the symptoms is a comprehensive holistic treatment process. |
